Virtual Work Teams Advantages and Disadvantages
With the technology on an
ever-climbing incline, businesses are venturing into different areas to better accommodate
their employees with the innovative technology available to them. One of the
ways that employers are taking advantage of this technology is by creating
virtual work teams. As defined by Wikipedia, “A virtual team (also known as a geographically dispersed team, distributed team, or remote team) usually refers to a group of individuals who work together from different geographic locations and rely
on communication technology such as email, FAX, and video or voice conferencing
services in order to collaborate.”
With this new way of providing work,
as like everything else, there are many advantages and disadvantages to take in
account before deciding if it is a right fit for you. There are many more
avenues to look down besides the one that blindsides you with the thought of
being able to work from anywhere. I would first like to discuss the most common
disadvantages of the virtual work team, so you can decide if any of these items
would be rougher on you than you had originally thought.
DISADVANTAGES
As you would assume from the word “virtual”
you are not exactly present with any of your co-workers while working. Not
being able to have face-to-face contact with your team can lead into issues
from not being able to form a solid, trusting relationship. Without being
presented with that time, you may begin to feel a lack in trust or that you are
putting in more time than other is. By letting your team get to know each other
on a personal level before starting an assignment has shown promising results
for the efficiency of the team.
You may also find yourself working
along people in a different time zone or culture. To help minimize the issue
with the time zone difference it is best to have collaboration tools that the team
can easily have access to. This could help by reducing the need of so many
online meetings and time overlaps. You will need to keep in mind that many
virtual teams are made up of individuals split up over many cultures. Diverse
cultures may have different customs, values, and work habits. It is very
important to find common ground while working inside teams such as these. The best
way to find a common ground with another is to implement an effective
communication standard.
Communication is key in most virtual
teams, and is often one of the most frequent problem among them. Miscommunication
can be very frustrating venture, as you need to learn how your written words
may sound to someone else or how they may interpret them. Because of these miscommunication
errors brings on a loss of information, people may be confused on deadlines,
document titles, and meeting arrangements. Counteracting this issue is best done
by using the right communication channels for what is needing to be done and
ensuring that everyone completely understands.
With virtual teams being able to work
anywhere, anytime, many people struggle with keeping a healthy balance between
there personal and work lives. As you can be reached at any time, it is
possible that is can become invasive into your everyday life. It is important
that you keep a routine with boundaries set forth. This will help keep the
balance and the work motivation at an appropriate level while also keeping the
exhaustion and stress to a minimum.
ADVANTAGES
By now you may be thinking, why would companies
and employees even be willing to do virtual teams if there are so many
disadvantages? Even though is may look fearful to some, many people can
completely work through all the issues of a virtual team and shine with all the
benefits. It is also becoming a significant role within companies and their
employees lives.
One of the most appealing components of
virtual teams is having a flexible schedule. Letting people have control over their
own time gives people a feeling of self-control and makes them feel more responsible
for their work. This also a creates the ability to travel for work or pleasure
much easier. Not being locked down to a certain location people are now able to
choose their physical work space and change it up whenever necessary. Many
people within the virtual work world claim to be more productive with their work
than ever before because of this freedom.
All this self-control and new-found responsibilities
gives people the comforts they have desired for, such as the way they are
dressed, where they choose to work, and designing their own schedule. Making
the balancing of work and personal life a bit easier on them; although, as
mentioned before it does take certain tasks to achieve this. People often report
that they find their work-life balance much more manageable with this type of
work.
Being a virtual business doesn’t only have
its advantages for the employee but for the employers as well. By not having a
physical location large enough to accommodate all of its employee or even have
a location at all, saves both the employer and employee money on transporting
to and from the workplace. It also saves businesses money on the upkeep of the
facilities and supplies.
Without the need to travel back and
forth to work and supplies. The virtual team businesses are creating a greener
business path. People are no longer needing to print copies of their documents
for others to look at but now using collaboration tools to work on assignments simultaneously.
Making it cleaner for the environment and safer for future generations.
The virtual team style may or may not
be for you and it is better to know ahead of time if it is something that you
would be able to handle before jumping into it. Although, more and more
businesses are merging to this type of business, there is still time to
discover it for yourself. As business start to test the waters out for themselves,
they are providing a physical location and virtual option. Only you know if you
are capable of being in the virtual world, so examine the advantages and disadvantages
carefully.
